If you have had a new fence/deck installed you should have a stain or waterproof done between 1 - 6 months after installed. If you add stain or waterproof to new wood to soon the moisture in the wood from being treated will not have any way to breath out and will cause your wood to start to rot from the inside out.

For the best results you should have your fence/deck stained or waterproof every 2 to 4 years. This has a lot to do with what product you use and how much traffic is on the surface.
